Chemical duty: why PTFE wins

Sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids — plus polar and non-polar solvents — attack metals and swell elastomers. PTFE maintains media barrier performance across a wide temperature band when flange load, backup design, and grade are matched to service.

Engineering teams specify PTFE for gaskets, valve seats and balls, pump bushings, agitator seals, and spacers in reactors, transfer lines, and dosing skids.

Start from chemical industry PTFE or specify PTFE gasket and virgin PTFE ball to drawing.

Virgin vs filled grades in chemical service

Virgin PTFE maximizes chemical breadth for gaskets and high-purity paths. Glass-filled sheet reduces creep in high bolt-load flanges. Carbon or bronze filled parts improve wear in valve seats and bushings exposed to sliding contact.

Share media composition, concentration, temperature, and pressure cycles — filled grades are not automatically compatible with every acid at every concentration.

Gasket design notes

Chemical flange leaks often trace to:

  • Under-specified gasket stress (virgin creep)
  • Missing inner or outer backup rings at high pressure
  • Wrong flange finish or bolt torque procedure

Review PTFE gasket benefits and consider filled sheet for high-load joints.

Valve trim specifications

Provide valve OEM drawings including seat angle, ball diameter, pressure class, and actuation torque targets. Export rebuild programs benefit from kit numbering and batch labels.
