What is PTFE?

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a fluoropolymer best known for non-stick cookware, but in industrial supply it is specified for chemical resistance, low friction, and thermal stability. The carbon-fluorine backbone resists attack from most acids, bases, and solvents that degrade metals and many elastomers.

Industrial buyers encounter PTFE as machined parts, molded seals, sheet and rod stock, gaskets, and valve trim. The same base polymer is compounded with fillers — glass, carbon, bronze, graphite — when applications need improved wear, conductivity, or dimensional stability under load.

Why industries specify PTFE

Process plants choose PTFE when three conditions overlap:

  1. Aggressive media — sulfuric acid, caustic, solvents, and hydrocarbons that swell rubber or corrode steel.
  2. Temperature extremes — service above elastomer limits or below embrittlement points, within grade-specific ranges.
  3. Low friction or non-stick — valve balls, bushings, and conveyor contact surfaces where sticking causes downtime.

PTFE is not universal. It creeps under high compressive load in virgin form, and softens at the upper end of its temperature range. That is why filled grades and proper geometry — backup rings, metal retainers, controlled gasket stress — matter in valve and flange design.

When rubber fails from swelling or extractables in pharma and food lines, FDA-suitable PTFE is often specified. When metal corrodes in chemical transfer, PTFE gaskets and machined spacers provide a stable barrier.

Rod and sheet stock are starting points for CNC bushings, spacers, and custom seals. Gaskets cut from sheet seal flanges in chemical and pharma piping. Balls and valve seats control flow in corrosive service. Diaphragms and bellows absorb movement while isolating media.

Virgin PTFE suits maximum chemical inertness. Glass-filled PTFE reduces cold flow under flange load. Carbon-filled grades improve wear and thermal paths in dynamic seals. PTFE is supplied as compression molded preforms, CNC machined components from stock, or hybrid routes — mold near-net shape then finish critical surfaces. Route selection affects unit cost, lead time, and tolerance capability. High-volume simple geometry favors molding; tight-tolerance prototypes favor machining.
