Friction Material Compaction Behaviour
Friction Material Compaction Behaviour — density decides how the pad performs
A brake pad or clutch facing is a compacted composite of fibres, fillers, binder and friction modifiers, and its friction coefficient, wear rate and fade behaviour all follow from how uniformly it was pressed. Density variation is not a cosmetic defect here — it changes how the part performs in service.
Applications
- Friction formulations are complex blends and do not flow evenly, so charge weight and distribution across the cavity govern whether the finished pad has uniform density corner to corner.
- Most friction materials are hot-pressed, meaning the binder cures under pressure. Cure profile and degassing matter for the same reasons as any thermoset, but the consequence of getting it wrong is a pad that fades or delaminates rather than one that merely looks wrong.
- Backing plate bonding usually happens in the same operation, so the press has to hold the plate located and flat while the friction mix is compacted onto it — the bond line is formed under the same pressure that forms the pad.
Scope and process
Multi-cavity tooling is normal for volume, which makes cavity-to-cavity consistency the central process control problem. A single cavity running cool or under-filled produces parts that pass visual inspection and fail on the dynamometer.
Materials we work with
The blend is abrasive to tooling and often contains fibres that behave anisotropically — orientation induced during charge placement can carry through into the finished part’s wear behaviour.
Tooling support
Heated multi-cavity tooling with even zone control, built for an abrasive compound. Cavity wear is faster than in polymer moulding and is planned for rather than treated as a fault.
Choosing the right option
Specify from total projected area across all cavities for tonnage, section thickness for cure time, and cavity count for the required output rate — then confirm the platen can hold temperature evenly across that cavity spread.
Quality checks and inspection
Density and thickness are checked across the cavity set rather than on a single part, because the failure mode this catches is a single deviant cavity rather than a whole-batch problem.
Commissioning and handover
Establish the cure profile on the customer’s own formulation, and validate across every cavity position rather than the first-off part only.
Export packing and lead time
HEMSUN is a DGFT IEC registered exporter (Government of India). Machines ship knocked down where transport requires it, with erection drawings supplied.
Maintenance and spare parts
Heater and thermocouple integrity plus cavity wear. Because scrap from a single cool cavity is easy to misattribute to the formulation, zone logging pays for itself.
