Metal powder compacts by particle deformation and cold welding rather than by the mechanical interlock that holds a PTFE preform together. The consequence is that friction against the die wall creates a density gradient through the part, and controlling that gradient is what separates a usable compact from a cracked one.

Applications

  • Wall friction means the powder nearest the punch densifies first and the far end least. In a single-action press that gradient runs the full height of the part, which is why tall components are pressed double-action — top and bottom punches moving together halve the distance the pressure has to travel.
  • Compaction pressures for metal powders are far higher than for polymers, so tonnage per unit area is correspondingly greater and the press frame is designed for stiffness rather than merely for force.
  • Ejection is a separate engineering problem. A metal compact springs back against the die wall as pressure is released, so ejection force can be a substantial fraction of compaction force and the die needs a taper or a relief to let the part out without scoring.

Scope and process

Fill is volumetric, so apparent density and flow rate of the powder govern how repeatably the die cavity fills. A powder that does not flow freely produces weight variation between parts, and weight variation becomes dimensional variation after sintering.

Materials we work with

Green strength comes from cold welding between particles under pressure. That makes the compact handleable but brittle, and it means lubricant content is a real design variable — too little and ejection scores the part, too much and the sintered density suffers.

Tooling support

Tooling is hardened and highly finished because the powder is abrasive and the die wall does the work of both forming and releasing. Multi-level parts need independently controlled punches so each level reaches its own density.

Choosing the right option

Specify from the part first: projected area and height set tonnage and whether single- or double-action is required, and the number of distinct levels determines how many independently controlled punch motions the press needs.

Quality checks and inspection

Green density and green strength are checked before sintering, and weight consistency across a run is monitored as the leading indicator of fill problems.

Commissioning and handover

Prove the press on the actual powder blend. Lubricant content, particle size distribution and apparent density all shift the fill and ejection behaviour enough to matter.
