Glass-Filled PTFE Washer — why this filler for this component
A thrust washer under constant axial load is the clearest case of the creep problem: an unfilled PTFE washer slowly thins, the assembly loses preload, and end float appears where there was none. Glass filling holds the thickness.
Where Glass-Filled PTFE Washer is used
Against a bronze-filled washer
glass holds thickness better under sustained static load and keeps chemical resistance, while bronze conducts heat far better and suits higher speeds. If the washer is turning fast, bronze; if it is holding preload, glass.
Thickness loss beyond the assembly tolerance is the end of life. Uneven wear across the annulus is a message about housing parallelism rather than about the material.
Key properties
Compound
Glass-filled PTFE, typically 15% or 25% glass fibre
Duty
sustained axial load, low to moderate speed
How it behaves here
Fibre reinforcement resists cold flow under the continuous pressure a thrust face sees. For an assembly whose preload was set at build and is not adjustable afterwards, that dimensional stability is the whole reason the washer exists.
Where it does not belong
The fibres are abrasive to soft faces, and on a flat continuous contact that abrasion is spread across the whole annulus rather than a narrow band — so a soft or plated thrust face will wear noticeably. Friction is also higher than unfilled PTFE.
Specifications
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Compound | Glass-filled PTFE, typically 15% or 25% glass fibre |
| Duty | Sustained axial thrust, low to moderate speed |
| Form supplied | Moulded and machined to drawing |
| Governing factor | Thickness retention against creep |
| Counterface | Hardened steel; avoid soft or plated thrust faces |
| Not suitable for | High-speed thrust duty — specify bronze-filled |
Manufacturing process
Compression moulded from 15% or 25% glass compound, sintered, then machined to your drawing.
Material selection notes
Fibre reinforcement resists cold flow under the continuous pressure a thrust face sees. For an assembly whose preload was set at build and is not adjustable afterwards, that dimensional stability is the whole reason the washer exists.
How to specify your order
Against a bronze-filled washer: glass holds thickness better under sustained static load and keeps chemical resistance, while bronze conducts heat far better and suits higher speeds. If the washer is turning fast, bronze; if it is holding preload, glass.
Quality checks and inspection
Dimensions are verified on CMM against your drawing. Filler content and sintered density are checked per ASTM D792, with tensile and elongation per ASTM D4894. A mill test certificate stating the lot, filler content and measured values ships with the order.
Ordering and export documentation
Both faces must be flat and parallel. A washer cannot redistribute load, so a non-parallel housing concentrates the whole thrust on one edge and that edge fails first regardless of the compound.
