Bronze-Filled PTFE Washer — why this filler for this component
A thrust washer carries axial load across one flat annular contact, and that geometry creates a heat problem a bush does not have: the frictional heat generated across the whole face has nowhere to go except through the washer and the two components either side of it.
Where Bronze-Filled PTFE Washer is used
Against a glass-filled washer
bronze conducts heat far better, which is decisive on a continuous flat contact. Glass-filled resists creep well and keeps chemical resistance, so it suits lower-speed thrust duty in aggressive media.
End of life is thickness loss beyond the assembly tolerance, and it is usually uneven if the faces were not parallel. A washer that has worn into a wedge shape is telling you about the housing, not about the material.
Key properties
Compound
Bronze-Filled PTFE, typically 40% bronze in 60% PTFE
How it works here
Bronze filling is specified here largely for thermal conductivity. It gives the heat a path out through the washer into the adjacent metal faces, which is what allows the contact to survive the PV it sees. The load-carrying benefit matters too, but on a flat thrust face the heat path is usually the deciding argument.
Where it does not belong
As with any bronze-filled part, the filler is chemically exposed and the compound is neither inert nor food-safe. On a thrust face this also means the washer should not be used where debris from the bronze could migrate into a process.
Specifications
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Compound | Bronze-filled PTFE, typically 40% bronze |
| Duty | Axial thrust load, dry running |
| Form supplied | Moulded and machined to drawing |
| Governing factor | Heat removal through a continuous flat contact |
| Counterface | Flat, parallel, ground faces essential |
| Not suitable for | Acids, steam, oxidisers, food contact |
Manufacturing process
Compression moulded from 40% bronze in 60% PTFE compound, sintered, then machined to your drawing. Filled compounds need higher compaction pressure than unfilled PTFE to reach full density through the section.

Quality checks and inspection
Dimensions are verified on CMM against your drawing. Filler content and sintered density are checked per ASTM D792, with tensile and elongation per ASTM D4894. A mill test certificate stating the lot, filler content and measured values ships with the order.
Ordering and export documentation
Both mating faces must be flat and parallel. Unlike a bush, a thrust washer cannot redistribute load — if the faces are not parallel the whole load concentrates on one edge and that edge fails first. Check flatness before fitting, not after failure.
