A thermoset compound is not simply compacted — it is cured. Pressure shapes it while heat drives an irreversible chemical reaction, and the press has to hold both under control simultaneously. That dual requirement is what makes a thermoset press different from a powder press that only has to apply force.
Applications
- The cure reaction releases volatiles, so the press must breathe. Degassing strokes — briefly relieving pressure part-way through the cycle — let gas escape that would otherwise be trapped as porosity or blisters in the finished part.
- Cure time is set by the compound and by section thickness, not by the machine. A thicker section needs longer at temperature because heat has to reach the centre, and rushing it leaves an under-cured core inside a properly cured skin.
- Platen temperature uniformity governs consistency across a multi-cavity tool. A cavity running cool produces an under-cured part, and because that shows up only at test rather than visually it is a persistent source of unexplained scrap.
Scope and process
SMC, BMC and DMC compounds each flow differently: sheet compound is loaded as a charge pattern and flows to fill, bulk compound behaves more like a paste. Charge placement is a real process variable, because where the material starts determines how it knits and where weld lines end up.
Materials we work with
Once cured, the reaction cannot be reversed — there is no reprocessing a mis-moulded thermoset part the way a thermoplastic can be reground. That puts the emphasis on getting cure profile and charge weight right, since every fault becomes scrap.
Tooling support
Tooling is heated, usually electrically or with oil circulation, and needs even zone control across the cavity set. Venting is designed in rather than added later, and shear edges control flash without letting the compound escape before it cures.
Choosing the right option
Specify from cavity layout and part section: projected area of all cavities sets tonnage, section thickness sets cure time and therefore cycle rate, and the number of heating zones follows from the platen size and cavity spread.
Quality checks and inspection
Cure state is verified on the part rather than assumed from the timer — density and hardness across the cavity set reveal a cool cavity or a short cycle before a batch is committed.
Commissioning and handover
Establish the cure profile on the customer’s own compound. Supplier formulations differ, and a profile proved on one batch of compound is a starting point rather than a specification.
Export packing and lead time

Maintenance and spare parts
Heater and thermocouple integrity dominates. Drift on a single zone shows up as scrap from that cavity only, which is why zone-by-zone temperature logging is worth having.
