PTFE Powder Compaction Behaviour — what the powder demands of the press

PTFE powder does not flow or compact like a metal or ceramic powder, and almost every design decision in a PTFE press follows from that. It traps air, it needs a long slow stroke to release it, and it recovers elastically after pressure is removed — so the machine has to be built around the material rather than the other way round.

Applications

  • Compaction pressure comes from the powder datasheet, not from a rule of thumb. A general-purpose PTFE moulding powder is typically compacted around 20–25 MPa to reach full green density; a fine or filled grade will state something different, and applied trials establish it where no datasheet exists.
  • Press tonnage follows directly: force equals compaction pressure multiplied by the projected area of the part, so the powder grade and the part footprint together determine the machine, in that order.
  • Compaction speed is limited to roughly 5–10 mm per second because PTFE powder entrains air. Pressing faster does not save time — it traps air in the preform, which appears as internal voids or as cleavage cracks when the part is sintered.

Scope and process

Once tonnage is known, the hydraulic side is sized as one interconnected system through Pascal’s law: cylinder bore area sets the pressure needed, which sets pump displacement and pressure, which sets motor speed, torque and power. Sizing these in isolation is what produces an oversized motor running at a fraction of its capacity.

Materials we work with

PTFE also expands and contracts far more than the steel around it, and it recovers elastically when pressure is released. Tooling must allow for that recovery, and decompression is stepped rather than instantaneous so that stored strain energy is bled off in controlled increments instead of splitting the preform.

Tooling support

Die bores are polished, and ejection is by a bottom hydraulic cylinder that lifts the green preform out without chipping the edge. A green PTFE preform has very little strength — it is held together by mechanical interlock, not by any binder — so every tooling decision is about not damaging it before it reaches the oven.

Choosing the right option

The practical route is: application → powder grade → datasheet compaction pressure → part projected area → tonnage → hydraulic system → automation level. Working the other way round, starting from an available machine tonnage, is how presses end up either unable to reach density or grossly oversized for the job.

Quality checks and inspection

Green density is the check that matters before sintering, because a preform that is under-compacted cannot be recovered later in the oven. Sintered parts are then verified for density per ASTM D792 and dimensionally on CMM.

Commissioning and handover

A press is proved on your own powder, not on a sample. Fill behaviour differs between grades and suppliers, and a machine that is correct on one PTFE powder can need a different fill and dwell profile on another.
